What is LaptopSentry?
LaptopSentry is a software solution to the problem of laptop theft. LaptopSentry allows you to keep your important files backed up automatically. If your laptop ever goes missing, you can use our web portal to track your laptop, encrypt or delete sensitive files, capture webcam images from the missing machine, and much more.
How does LaptopSentry work?
After signing up for a LaptopSentry account, you are asked to install the LaptopSentry desktop client. Once you've installed the client and activated the license, your machine is under protection. You can add folders to be automatically backed up, and if the machine ever goes missing, you can use our web portal to access and monitor the machine remotely.
How much does LaptopSentry cost?
LaptopSentry is priced for even the smallest budget. Personal licenses start at $3 per month and that includes 5gb of backup space.
I've installed LaptopSentry on my laptop, but the web portal says it can't locate my machine. What's wrong?
LaptopSentry relies on Wi-Fi to detect your location. If Wi-Fi is turned off, your laptop can not locate itself. Further, while there is exceptional coverage for Wi-Fi in most of the United States and Europe, other countries may or may not have reliable enough Wi-Fi access to locate your laptop.
My laptop is missing. What now?
When your laptop goes missing, LaptopSentry goes to work. To get started, login to your account through the web portal at
http://www.laptopsentry.com/members/. Once you are logged in, from the main management console, click the "Enable Recovery Tools" button as shown below.

This will tell LaptopSentry to hide it's presence on your laptop and to begin capturing monitoring information. It will also switch the dashboard to Recovery mode. From the recovery console, you can lock the machine, backup, encrypt, or delete sensitive data, and communicate with whoever has the laptop.
I want to add other machines to my account. How do I do that?
LaptopSentry allows as many laptops as you have available licenses for to be protected at any one time. To add a new license seat for a laptop, navigate to the
Account Preferences page after logging in. Under the Licensing Details header, click the Add License button as shown below.
Next, choose the number of additional seats you'd like to add and click Continue.

With your new license added, download the LaptopSentry client using the link at the bottom of the Account Preferences page.

When registering, use the email/password combination of the account you want the machine added to.
How can I change my account password?
To change your current account password, navigate to the
Account Preferences page after logging in. Next, find the Change Password section shown below to change your password.

How do I tell LaptopSentry to automatically back up a folder on my laptop?
LaptopSentry automatically backs up the contents of directories that you choose for protection. Adding a backup folder can be accomplished from either the client application on the laptop, or through the backup tab in the web portal.
To add a folder from the web portal:
Login to the
User Portal. Once you are logged in, from the main management console, click the "Automatic Backup" tab in the top left corner of the console as shown below.

Once the Backup tab has loaded, click on the "Add a New Folder To Back Up" button to launch the folder selection menu.

From the folder selection menu, choose a new folder to be backed up automatically from the dialog window.

How do I encrypt or delete a folder on my missing machine?
LaptopSentry can encrypt and delete the contents of folders on your machine after it has been lost or stolen.
To encrypt or delete a folder from the web portal:
Login to the
User Portal. Once you are logged in, from the main management console, enable Recovery Tools if you have not already (see FAQ question 5 for more details) before proceeding. Once you have enabled Recovery Tools, click on the "Data Protection" tab of the recovery console to access the Folder/Encryption deletion menu, as shown below.

From the folder tree, select a folder to be marked for deletion or encryption. Use the buttons on the right to take action by either encrypting a directory, deleting a directory, or both. The legend beneath will reflect the color of those folders listed in the directory tree that have been deleted or encrypted. Note: Awaiting Confirmation means that we are awaiting for the missing machine to acknowledge receipt of the command for that folder. Check back periodically to see if the machine has checked in and received the messages.
